Income packs that cannot be rebuilt from the exhibits

A scored file can look complete while the income figure on the form cannot be reproduced from the payslips, statements, or accounts attached to it.

Close reading of printed accounts and a notepad

When we sit with a sample of personal financing and hire-purchase files in Kuala Lumpur, the first test is not whether income was ‘captured’. It is whether a second reader, using only the exhibits in the pack, can arrive at the same number the originator wrote on the form.

That test fails more often than credit operations expect. A common pattern is a basic salary that matches one payslip, plus a variable component that matches none of them. Another is a three-month average that quietly drops the weakest month, or a year-to-date figure used as if it were a monthly run-rate. Self-employed packs fail in a different way: SSM documents establish that a business exists, while the bank statements establish a different level of credits than the application claims.

None of this is exotic fraud. It is construction. The originator is trying to present a borrower the programme can accept. The scoring engine then receives a single income field that carries the construction inside it. If later arrears appear, the conversation turns to the scorecard. The file, if anyone opens it, already contained the problem.

A financial audit of the application does not replace bureau data or policy. It asks a slower question: can this number be rebuilt. Where it cannot, the finding belongs in the exception log, even if the engine would have scored the file cleanly.

Lenders who want this work to change behaviour need two things in the report: examples with the arithmetic shown, and a distinction between missing paper and optimistic paper. Missing paper is an operations fix. Optimistic paper is a credit-culture fix. Mixing them in one ‘documentation’ statistic hides the one that actually distorts capacity.

We do not tell clients to collect more documents for their own sake. We tell them which exhibits would have made the stated income reproducible, and which stated incomes would still be irreconcilable no matter how thick the file became.
