What a file-level financial audit is not

It is not a credit decision, not a scorecard validation, and not a promise that arrears will fall. It is a reading of whether the application can support the use that was made of it.

Daylight in a quiet professional office with a long work table

Clients sometimes arrive hoping we will bless a book, or condemn a scorecard, or produce a dashboard. That is not the work. QueryEngine Hub Advisory reads application files as financial documents. The output is a report about those files.

We do not approve or decline applicants. We do not call the engine. We do not estimate probability of default. We do not interview customers. We do not offer legal opinions on the enforceability of security. When a finding sounds like any of those things, we have written it badly and we rewrite it.

The value of the work is narrower and, for the people who have to answer for origination quality, more usable. A credit head can take a sample of irreconcilable income packs to operations. A second-line reviewer can take a set of empty override memos to committee. A product owner can see that the programme’s documentation list and the packs in the wild are not the same list.

There is a related confusion with statutory audit. We are not opining on the applicant’s financial statements. We are testing whether the statements, payslips, and bank records in the file support the figures the lender already used. If the accounts themselves are misstated, that may surface as an inconsistency; it is not a true-and-fair opinion.

Another confusion is model risk. Characteristic analysis, backtesting, and challenger models are someone else’s engagement. File audit and model validation can inform each other — a scorecard cannot be fair to a characteristic that was badly keyed — but they are not substitutes.

We state these limits in the engagement letter because they keep the report honest. A lender who needs a decisioning project, a validation project, or a collections review should hire for those things. A lender who needs to know whether the applications can bear the weight placed on them is in the right place.
